26 March, 2020. Covid19 what else

My beautiful Byron,

Another week passes in what is commonly known as ‘Lockdown’. In California that means we are practicing social distancing. We are neither down, nor locked. But we are advised to stay home excepting for important stuff. For us that means going to the Grocery store for food. And that is pretty ordinary as experiences go. Our local store, Ralphs, is operating as normal. Virtually no empty shelves, and the people are friendly. The ubiquitous sight of hand sanitizer is reassuring. Although, my hands feel a bit like Egyptian papyrus now.

Although we are fine and hardly affected at all, the same cannot be said for many. In South America, several countries who have right wing leaders are going about business as usual. They do not believe it is worth the price to the economy of shutting down business. Brazil is still open as normal. Mexico too. But if the current information is correct, then they are wrong. And the virus will sweep through their cities like a viral outbreak.

In South Africa they went into lockdown today. Yaya is in her frail care home in Bryanston and the good news there is they have agreed to allow Phumla, her carer, to stay with her. In order that she does not commute daily to the township as she has been doing. So that make Mrs. Helen very happy. She loves Phumla ‘as if she is my own daughter‘. Which is great news for me, knowing she is happy and as safe as can be. I do have a concern that when the virus hits the townships, it will spread quickly. So better for Phumla as well to be safely quarantined in the care home.
