Historically, the blues medium was not
found in Britain prior to its introduction
to these shores in the post war years
by sailors returning from America with
recordings of this then new style of
music. Over a period of time the influence of these early recordings shaped an imitatory style which gradually evolved over a number of decades into what has now become a unique interpretative style, no longer a copy of American, 'sittin on the Porch while the rain done fall through my leakin roof, ' Its more a case of 'Life on the dole, in my terraced council house is pretty grim under the grey winter rain, so I drink a few pints with my mates, and we play the kind of thing that makes us feel better.'

Whereas American blues recordings formerly made one way traffic into the UK, over the past few decades UK blues artists like Eric Clapton, Gary Moore and Peter Green have established an international credibility for the reputation of British blues. With Blues Britannia, we hope that we have presented a broad cross section of the interpretative style that makes British blues unique. These recordings include performances by many of the best known players to grace the medium, all recorded to a high degree of quality as befits the digital medium of CD, whilst retaining the soulfulness without which blues music will be found lacking.
If music as an art form is a mirror
of the society from which it originates,
then this recording represents a 'photograph'
in time of the state of British Blues
in the nineties. |
